Nathan expelled from daycare!!

I have been waiting for this to happen and Nathan has officially been kicked out of daycare. The recent head injury sealed the deal for him. In the six months he has been in school, I have definitely noticed the gap between him and his peers widening, which is why I was exploring other options for him. I totally understand where they are coming from, that it is not a safe environment for him; however, it is not fun to hear. When your child is unable to be in a regular daycare, it is one more step in the process of accepting the label of Special Needs.

Anyway, I did take a tour of the preschool at United Cerebral Palsy. It was nice, but I was not necessarily blown away by it. The current daycare is so small and homey which is really nice. UCP has lockers, a gymnasium and other features that define it as more of a school/institutional type setting. Everyone was very nice. They have a full time nurse on staff and a physical therapist that is assigned to each classroom. They also can provide services through the IU so he could get all of his PT there. The more I describe it, the more I think it would be good for Nathan. I am just not good with change. The cost is about the same as his daycare now. There is a waiting list for the fall, but the director was pretty confident that there would be room for him. She did not think he would be able to start this summer. I think if she met him, she would find room for him!!! just kidding, sorry I'm his mother! So we will see what we can work out with his current daycare to get him through as long as possible.

Another head injury!!

Nathan fell on Thursday at school and hit his head on a book shelf. I took him to CHOP and he now has three staples in the back of his head and another hospital gown to add to his collection! This one has bears and rocket ships. My mother asked why the hospital/doctors offices allow him to take them home. How can they say no when he asks "take home please?" Anyway, his head is fine. He gets the staples out on Monday at the pediatricians office. He also has a physical therapy evaluation at CHOP King of Prussia and a dentist appointment on Monday. Last week I took Nathan to cardiology. They saw no abnormalities of the heart through the echo. They want to see him again in one year. We have also scheduled a follow-up with dermatology and a new GI doctor both in April. We still need to schedule with eye doctor, nutritionist and orthopedist.

On Tuesday I am going to see the preschool at United Cerebral Palsy in Chestnut Hill. It is an inclusive preschool meaning that there are typical children and special needs children in the same classroom. The good thing is that they would have some activities that are geared towards improving gross motor skills. We'll see, I don't know anything about funding or anything but thought it was worth exploring.

Nathan has been eating very well and the last time we weighed him at home he weighed 21 pounds 5 ounces!!
